Zero-Harm Philosophy & Leadership Commitment
ABB Infra operates under a fundamental corporate doctrine: "Every individual returns home safely, every day." In heavy civil engineering, complex bridge construction, and utility solar installations, risk is inherent, but accidents are entirely preventable through rigorous planning and disciplined adherence to engineering protocols.
All Executive Directors, Project Managers, Resident Engineers, and Subcontractor Supervisors are held personally accountable for safety audits, Daily Toolbox Talks (TBT), and proactive hazard elimination on their assigned segments.
Zero Tolerance for Bypassing
Any intentional bypassing of safety interlocks, scaffold tags, or machine guards results in immediate site expulsion and disciplinary contract termination.
100% Mandatory Toolbox Talks
No machinery starts and no workforce deploys without a documented 15-minute Morning Toolbox Talk addressing site-specific hazard analysis.
Universal Stop-Work Authority (SWA)
ABB Infra grants Universal and Absolute Stop-Work Authority (SWA) to every employee, engineer, technician, laborer, and third-party vendor present on our project premises.
Unconditional SWA Guarantee
Any worker who observes an imminent safety hazard, inadequate rigging, unstable ground, or lack of fall protection is legally and organizationally empowered to STOP WORK IMMEDIATELY. No worker shall ever face reprimand, retaliation, or loss of wages for exercising Stop-Work Authority in good faith.
Once SWA is triggered, work remains suspended until the Site Safety Officer (SSO) and Lead Project Engineer personally inspect the area, eliminate the hazard, and issue a written Safety Resumption Clearance.
Mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Standards
No person—regardless of rank, seniority, or client status—is permitted past the security barricades of any ABB Infra construction zone without certified Class-A PPE compliant with BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) and EN/ANSI equivalents:
| PPE Category | Mandatory Standard | Operational Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial Safety Helmet | IS 2925 / ANSI Z89.1 (Type 1, Class E) | High-density HDPE with 4-point chin strap secured at all times |
| High-Visibility Apparel | EN ISO 20471 (Class 3) | Fluorescent orange/lime vest with 50mm retroreflective bands |
| Protective Footwear | IS 15298 / ISO 20345 (S3) | Steel-toe 200J impact resistant with puncture-proof Kevlar midsole |
| Eye & Face Shield | IS 8510 / ANSI Z87.1 | Anti-scratch UV safety glasses during all daylight site operations |
| Full-Body Fall Arrest Harness | IS 3521 / EN 361 | Dual-lanyard harness with energy absorber for all work > 1.8 meters |
| Arc-Flash Protective Gear | NFPA 70E / IEC 61482 | Flame-resistant 40 cal/cm² suit in live 33kV - 765kV substation zones |
Working at Heights & Scaffolding Directives
Working at elevated elevations (including pier caps, bridge decks, peb roofs, and transmission towers) poses severe fall risks and demands strict compliance:
-
100% Tie-Off Rule: At any elevation exceeding 1.8 meters (6 feet), continuous 100% tie-off using dual self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) or shock-absorbing lanyards to certified anchor points (minimum 22.2 kN load capacity) is compulsory.
-
Scaffold Tagging System (ScaffTag): Daily structural inspections by certified scaffolders. Only scaffolds displaying a GREEN Tag are approved for climbing. A RED Tag signifies immediate out-of-service prohibition.
-
Perimeter Edge Protection & Safety Nets: Continuous double guardrails (top rail at 1.1m, intermediate rail at 0.6m, toe boards of 150mm) plus heavy-duty catchment nets deployed under elevated expressway spans.
Heavy Lifting, Mobile Cranes & Rigging Directives
Lifting pre-cast bridge segments, 765kV transformers, and heavy structural steel girders requires calibrated engineering execution:
No Personnel under Suspended Loads
Strict exclusion radius barricaded with physical warning tape. Zero tolerance for standing or walking within the crane swing radius or directly beneath any suspended hook.
Mandatory Critical Lift Plan
Lifts exceeding 75% of crane rated capacity, tandem dual-crane lifts, or lifts near energized power lines require a written engineering plan signed by the Lead Mechanical Engineer.
100% Outrigger Pad Deployment
All mobile hydraulic cranes must fully deploy outriggers on engineered steel spreader mats over verified compacted sub-base soil prior to boom extension.
Deep Excavation & Trenching Protocols
Trench collapses and underground utility strikes present acute hazards during highway grading and foundation pilings:
- Ground Penetration Utility Scan (Dial Before You Dig): Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and cable locator surveys are mandatory before initiating backhoe or excavator digging.
- Shoring & Benching Mandate: Any trench deeper than 1.5 meters must feature certified trench boxes, sheet piling, or 45-degree angle soil benching compliant with geotechnical soil type (Type A, B, or C).
- Atmospheric Testing in Confined Trenches: Continuous multi-gas detectors (O2, H2S, CO, LEL) active whenever workers enter deep culverts or micro-tunnel bores.
High-Voltage Power Grids & Substation Safety
For solar EPC installations, switchyard erections, and 765kV grid interconnections:
Lockout / Tagout (LOTO) Golden Rule
Zero electrical work shall be conducted on live circuits without physical red-padlocked LOTO isolation verified with calibrated zero-energy potential probes. Lockout padlocks are keyed individually to the executing electrical engineer.
Strict minimum approach boundary clearances (MABC) are permanently demarcated around live transmission corridors: minimum 3.0 meters for 33kV, 5.0 meters for 220kV, and 8.0 meters for 765kV utility conductors.
Emergency Medical & Golden Hour Trauma Protocol
Every active ABB Infra project site maintains a fully equipped On-Site Medical Center staffed with certified trauma paramedics and a 4x4 Emergency Mobile Ambulance:
-
Golden Hour Evacuation Plan: Pre-arranged MOUs with tertiary multispecialty trauma centers within a 30-minute transit radius of all operational work camps.
-
Quarterly Full-Scale Mock Drills: Mandatory emergency evacuation, fire suppression, and confined-space rescue drills conducted every 90 days in coordination with local district emergency services.
-
Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Any incident or high-potential near-miss triggers a multidisciplinary Root Cause Investigation completed within 72 hours and circulated across all Pan-India sites to prevent recurrence.
